As both designers and makers, we often find ourselves at the intersection of vision and execution. The Yolo Island Resort in Ibeshe, Amuwo-Odofin LGA, Lagos, Nigeria, stands as an exemplary illustration of the harmonious union between thoughtful architectural and engineering design and masterful construction, woven into the fabric of the local environment and community. The project brief for Yolo Island Resort was multifaceted, aiming to create a space that seamlessly integrates the diverse activities cherished by beachgoers, spa enthusiasts, and those seeking rejuvenation and relaxation, while also amplifying the user experience in the most engaging manner.

We adeptly interpreted this brief, taking into account everything from user experience to the urban scale. With the site being uniquely situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Lagos Lagoon, it presented an exceptional opportunity to engage with the surrounding natural beauty.

One of the crucial aspects of the design was its orientation and relationship with the natural environment. The buildings at Yolo are thoughtfully oriented to the north and south, strategically taking advantage of the tropical southwest winds, a vital element in the hot and humid climate of Lagos. This orientation not only shields the buildings from the direct sun, reducing heat gain but also promotes natural ventilation, which contributes to energy efficiency and creates a serene atmosphere.

Also, in terms of material selection, there was a conscientious effort to incorporate materials indigenous to the region, such as palm fronds, wood, clay, and seashells, which reduced the carbon footprint associated with transporting materials from afar. The use of palm fronds and wood particularly exemplifies the intricate balance between architectural vision and craftsmanship. Local artisans were engaged to craft these materials into structurally sound and visually appealing elements. Concrete and laser-cut steel were also utilized to ensure structural integrity, with the concrete providing rigidity against wind loads and the laser-cut steel enabling the creation of an artistic A-Frame structure essential for aerodynamic efficiency and stability.

Beyond the material selection, Yolo embraces art that resonates with the local culture. Local artists were commissioned to create wall murals and installations using seashells, which celebrate the coastal nature of Lagos. These artistic installations serve to narrate stories of the community and their relationship with the sea, infusing the resort with cultural depth and relevance.

Community collaboration was at the heart of Yolo's construction, from sourcing materials to engaging local artisans and incorporating artwork that reflects the cultural heritage. This approach ensured that the resort is not just built in the community but is a part of it.

Sustainability was also a core focus. Yolo is primarily powered by solar energy, with generators to augment or serve as backup. The design minimizes energy needs for lighting and ventilation through the intelligent use of natural light and ventilation strategies. Additionally, the resort launched with clean energy, and automated access control systems, with plans to integrate the Internet of Things and a complete building management system in the future.

In addition, the A-Frame structure houses six guest chalets, staggered along the Atlantic Ocean to maximize and vary ocean views. The ground floor is open and fluid, containing a professional basketball/multipurpose sports court, restaurant, conference room/multipurpose space, spa, infinity pool, jacuzzi, paddle pool, and kids pool. An executive lounge and bar on one side and a gym on the other flank this central mass, offering guests a diverse range of activities including dining, musical performances, sports, art exhibitions, and conferencing.

With design work commencing in April 2021, construction began in August 2021 and is slated for completion on October 2023. In conclusion, Yolo Island Resort stands as an embodiment of architectural vision, skilled craftsmanship, innovative technology, and a profound respect for the environment.
